Remarks:
The identification of the author of the Cause of the foundation of the schools with the author of the Ecclesiastical history is disputed, as is the identification of Barhadbeshabba Arbaya with the contemporary Barhadbeshabba, bishop of Hulwan. The three figures may be best considered as distinct.
