Bar Sahde of Karka

Name(s):
  • Bar Sahde of Karka (ܒܪܣܗܵܕܐ ܟܪܟܝܐ, barsāhdē karkāyā (lit. Son of the martyrs of Karka))
  • Bar Sahde (برسهدى, barsahdā)
  • Bar Sahde (برسهدا, barsahdā)
Date:
6th-7th c.
Confession:
  • Christian (East Syrian)
Remarks:
Assemani (1725: 229 n. 8) places Bar Sahde in the 8th c. without compelling reasons. He is followed only by Wood (2013: 252-253). Hoyland (1997: 392 n. 20) suggests that he might rather be identified with the Bar Sahde mentioned in a Gospel colophon (London, British Library, Add. 14 471, f. 108r) as a teacher of the School of Nisibis in the 25th year of Chosroes' reign (615). Fiey's (1964) identification of Bar Sahde with the author of the History of Karka d-Beth Sloh has been followed only by Jullien (2010: 281).
