Title(s):
  • The kingdom of the Hephthalites
  • Պագաւորութիւն Հեփթաղինեկայ
    (T‘agaworut‘iwn Hep‘t‘ałinekay, The kingdom of the Hepthalites)
Period covered:
Unknown
Language:
Greek
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Secular history (general)
  • Secular history (ethnic history)
Remarks:
The Hepthalite kingdom flourished ca. 450-560 but continued to exist into the seventh c. This renders a date in the sixth or seventh c. most likely. The reference occurs in an Armenian text that pretends to be seventh c. but is embedded in a letter supposedly written by Zenob of Glak, dated to the fourth c. The History of Zenob also postdates the fourth c., so there are good reasons to think that this History of the Hepthalites should also be dated later.
