Canons and history of the council of Nicaea

Marutha of Maypherqat was the representative of Western Christianity at the synod of Seleucia-Ctesiphon in 410. The tradition ascribes to him a Syriac translation of the Canons of the council of Nicaea (the text of which does not match with the original Greek one) and 73 additional canons that he supposedly submitted to the synod for approval. Together with these canons, the manuscripts preserve a collection of short texts that go under the name of Marutha as well, mostly of historical nature (an account of the Council of Nicaea, a brief history of monasticism, a brief history of heresies, ...). The canons and the related texts have been published all together by Vööbus (1982), although it is clearly a stratified corpus, and it is admittedly impossible to distinguish what is authentically Marutha's from what was added to the original core over the centuries.

The attribution of the history to Marutha is not mentioned in the manuscript, but based on the witness of Abdisho bar Brika.
