Remarks:
The manuscript containing the Paschal chronicle preserves, in marginal notes on folios 241v-242v and 272v, fifteen fragments ascribed to an otherwise unknown Great Chronographer. The fragments concern events dating from 477 to 750 and some of them are paralleled in Nicephorus' Breviarium and in Theophanes' Chronographia. According to Whitby (1982; 1983), the Great Chronographer is the author of the eighth-century iconoclast source shared by Nicephorus and Theophanes. In contrast, Mango (1986; 1997) thinks that the fragments come from a later collection (ninth century) gathering excerpts from Theophanes, Nicephorus and other earlier sources.
