On Italy

The passage has been emended so as to refer to the imperial historian Granius Licinianus or Granius Flaccus (cf. Kaster 1988: 389, inclining to accept the emendation, but see now Kaster 2011). P.L. Schmidt (in Herzog 1988: 131-132; see also Schmidt 2014) keeps the text as it stands but relies on another emendation in Servius, On Aeneid 7.445 to argue that Carminius is fourth-century in date. In fact, there is nothing that allows us to date Carminius exactly. On the basis of the single fragment, it seems that the work collected traditions about early Italy.
