Remarks:
Stephen had a monastic education (Greenwood 2017). The nickname Asołik was attached to Step’anos Taronec‘i after 1072 (after Aristakes), but before 1163 (Samuel of Ani), but it may be incorrect. This may be a conflation with another Stephen who wrote a commentary on Jeremiah (Greenwood 2017). The earliest manuscript that preserves a title is Yerevan, Matenadaran 1482 (year 1678), which is also the only one to identify Stephen as a bishop. The title is missing from Yerevan, Matenadaran, 2865 as well as from the majority of the manuscripts that pre-date the nineteenth century. The end of book II, chapter 3 is missing in all of the manuscripts.
