Creation of the world

Title(s):
  • Creation of the world
  • Κοσμοποιΐα
    (Kosmopoiia, Creation)
Period covered:
Mythical past
Language:
Greek
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Poetry (historical epic)
Remarks:
Wyss (1949: 194, n. 45) attributes the poem of P. Stras. Gr. Inv. 480 (the so-called Cosmogony of Strasbourg) to Antimachus: it describes the creation of the world by Hermes and supposedly was a source of Gregory of Nazianzus. The identification of the two texts cannot be demonstrated. John Tzetzes (Lycophron 245) quotes three lines of an unspecified Antimachus: it is not possible to determine if he is identical with the poet of Heliopolis, or with another namesake instead.
