Remarks:
Michael the Great quotes a note of Apollonios on the beginning of Hebrew writing. Specifically, he affirms that Moses was the first to teach the Jews to write. The note is thus used to assert that the Hebrew language and writing are more recent than Aramaic. This suggests a Syriac origin for the author. The name appears as ’apūlūmūs (ܐܦܘܠܘܡܘܣ) in the manuscript of Michael’s Chronicle, but this is probably a mistake due to the similarity of the letter ‘m’ with the letters ‘on’ in the serto alphabet used for the manuscript. Apollonius’ work may have been written in Syriac.
