  • Chronicle (chronica)
Remarks:
The chronicle was arranged by the author in two parts, dealing respectively with civil events (ܩܪܘܢܘܓܪܐܦܝܐ ,'Chronography') and ecclesiastical events ( ܐܩܠܣܝܣܛܝܩܝ, 'Ecclesiastical history'). The Ecclesiastical history is in turn divided into a first part on the history of the Syrian Orthodox Church and a second one on the history of maphrians (representatives of the Syrian Orthodox Church in East Syrian territory) and the East Syrian Church. The work is commonly considered as an abridgment of Michael the Great's Chronicle. Although Bar Ebroyo is deeply dependent on Michael for the civil events up to the end of the twelfth century and for the ecclesiastical matters on the Syrian Orthodox Church, the parts on the Mongolian period (thirteenth century), his account of the East Syrian Church and the maphrianate derive from still partially unknown sources. The author affirms to have consulted many Arabic, Persian and Syriac books in the Maragha library (Budge 1932: 2).
