  • ܬܫܥܝ̈ܬܐ
    (taš‘iātā, Stories)
Period covered:
6th-9th c.?
Language:
Syriac
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Ecclesiastical history
  • Secular history (general)
Remarks:
John, son of Samuel, and his historical work are only mentioned by Dionysius of Tell Mahre in the preface of his lost History (quoted by Michael the Great). Dionysius mentions him among the authors who wrote 'stories that resemble ecclesiastical histories'. This indicates at least a narrative work (not a chronicle), possibly a church history.
Brooks (1906) considered him the probable author of the source shared by Dionysius and the Byzantine chronicler Theophanes Confessor for the seventh and eighth centuries.
