Remarks:
In his Kitab al-Fihrist, the Muslim bibliographer Ibn al-Nadim quotes fragments from a historical work ascribed to Yahyā al-Nahwiī, that is John the Grammarian. He says that this work was used by Ishaq ibn Hunayn in his account of the Greek physicians, and it is most likely through this work (likewise now lost) that Ibn al-Nadim had access to it. Although authentic works of John Philoponus, or John the Grammarian, circulated and are still preserved in Arabic translation, the name Yahyaā al-Nahḥwi was also associated with a number of non-Philoponian works and with figures whose identification with the historical John Philoponus is problematic. That the source used by Ishaq ibn Hunayn was actually a work of Philoponus is deemed very unlikely by Meyerhof (1931: 13, 21; Sezgin 1970: 157-160).
