Remarks:
Denah Isho is quoted in the Chronicle of Michael the Great concerning the foundation of the monastery of Mar Hanania, on the mountain of Mardin, in the year 1104 of the Greeks (792/793 A.D.). It is likely that Michael found the quote in his source, Dionysius of Tell Mahre. The passage is said to come from Denah Isho's Chronicle, and more precisely from his Ecclesiastical history, book 10 chapter 17. This might mean that the work was divided into a secular and an ecclesiastical part, just like Dionysius' own history. The same passage is reported by Bar Ebroyo in his Ecclesiastical history. Assemani (1725: 195) mentioned Bar Ebroyo' passage with reference to Ishodenah of Basra, taking for granted that the latter and Denah Isho are one and the same person. Fiey (1966: 435) remarked that the difference between the two names makes the identification uncertain. Furthermore, according to Abdisho bar Brika, Ishodenah of Basra's Ecclesiastical history was in three volumes, whereas Denah Isho's work consisted at least of 10 books, as we learn from Michael the Great.
