On the nations

Title(s):
  • On the nations
  • على الامم
    (‘alā ’l-umam, On the nations)
Period covered:
Biblical history
Language:
Syriac
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Sacred history
Remarks:
Agapius quotes this Musus/Moses the Wise and his book On the nations as the source of a piece of information on the sons of the biblical figure Joktan. The same account, in a summarized version and without any mention of the provenance, is reported also by Michael the Great (Chabot 1899: 22). This kind of material probably comes from biblical pseudepigrapha such as the Book of Jubilees, or the Cave of Treasures, whose original language might have been Greek, Syriac or Arabic.
