Remarks:
All the manuscripts of the List begin with the reign of Athanaric (except for the Vaticanus); there is less certainty about the end point. Every codex concludes its version with a different king (Huete Fudio 1994: 8, n.6). The original list was thus extended by various copyists. There are two main hypotheses about the first redaction of the List. Flórez (1754: 169-182) suggests that the original list was redacted during the reign of Erwig (680-687) and ended with his name. This first version was supposedly amplified on the occasion of the coronations of Egica (687) and Wittiza (700). A different interpretation is proposed by Mommsen (1898: 461): since a majority of manuscripts links the List to the Liber iudicum of Recceswinth, it was probably written during his reign (653-672), as he is the last king mentioned in the original list, and the list represented a historical introduction to the Liber iudicum of Recceswinth, as the latercula of consuls and emperors used to do for Roman law books.
