Ishodnah of Basra recounts that Gregory fled from Arbela to the land of the pagans, where he preached and wrote many books, including an Ecclesiastical history. The 'land of the pagans' might refer to the Roman Empire, as the Syriac word for 'pagan' (ḥanpā) is also used to indicate the 'Greeks/Hellenes'.
