Panegyric of Julian

Title(s):
  • Panegyric of Julian
Period covered:
361-363?
Language:
Latin
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Oration (panegyric)
  • Secular history (classicizing history)
Remarks:
The only information about a work dedicated to the emperor Julian comes from Ausonius. As Green (1991: 334) points out, this passage shows 'an unfavourable judgment on Julian's reign'.
The nature of Alcimus' work has been widely discussed. Booth (1974: 172, 239) hypothesizes that he wrote a single panegyric to both Julian and Sallust (named in lines 23-24), but that is not sure. A panegyric is most likely.
