Remarks:
Jacoby identifies Pausanias of Antioch with Pausanias of Damascus (mentioned by Constantine VII: FGrHist 854 T 1). The identification has been widely discussed (Christ - Schmid - Stählin 1913: 759, n. 2; Diller 1955: 268-279; Janiszewski 2006: 181-184; Asirvatham 2014). Jacoby's dating (fourth century A.D., before 358/359 A.D.) is based on a supposed link between Pausanias' writing and Libanius' Antiochicus (Foerster 1906: xxxiv-xxxv; Wiemer 2003: 450). John Malalas, Chronicle 8.25, which can be interpreted as indicating that Domninus used Pausanius, would imply a terminus ante quem of the first half of the fourth century. John Malalas mentions Pausanias in four passages of his Chronography (FGrHist 854 F9-F12), presenting him as a chronographer (χρονογράφος). This does not preclude an identification with the author quoted by Stephen of Byzantium and John Tzetzes (BNJ 854). According to Malalas (cf. F 10), Pausanias wrote his work in verses (ποιητικῶς).
