    (maktbānūtā d-menandrūs, Chronicle of Menander)
Period covered:
Creation-?
Language:
Syriac
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Chronicle (general)
Remarks:
The author could be a gnostic of the second century, a pupil of Simon the mage, who is mentioned in Justin (I Apology 26A) and Irenaeus (Against Heresies 1.23.5). The attribution to Menander of a chronicle could be seen as an attempt to supply proof for what Justin says. The genre can be inferred from the fact that Michael uses Menander as witness for the calculation of the regnal years of Nimrud. The material may have come to Michael via Andronicus.
