Remarks:
Asaph is quoted by Michael the Great for the period between the Flood and Abraham. From the information provided by Michael the Great, we infer that Asaph's work consisted of two books at least, the first one concerning Hebrew chronology and the other one dealing with Chaldaean history. The genre of Chronicle can be inferred from the fact that Asaph is quoted, among other things, for the chronologies of the patriarchal era. Asaph's citation as a source for the Aramaic names of the signs of the Zodiac in the 'Treatise on the twelve stoicheia of the sun (= signs of the zodiac)' by Andronicus suggests that he could have composed his work in Aramaic. In the same work he is cited as 'Historian of the Hebrews'. Asaph’s chronology from Adam to Mathusalem matches with the LXX version in opposition to the Hebrew one. The name might be a pseudonym, after the author to whom a number of psalms are ascribed (e.g. 78, 79, 83).
