Title(s):
- History
Period covered:
Creation-Diocletian (and possibly until Leo I)
Language:
Greek
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
- Secular history (local history)
- Chronicle (general)
Remarks:
The work was concerned with Antiochene history, with special emphasis on its legendary past. It is likely that Malalas used Domninus extensively throughout book XIV of his work (Bourier 1899: 9-22; Jeffreys 1990: 178; Croke 1990: 8). Patzig argued that Nestorianus, another historian mentioned by Malalas, and Domninus were one and the same person (Patzig 1901: 40-53). Janiszewski places the composition of Domninus' work in the mid-fourh century (Janiszewski 2006: 291). It is likely that Domninus was not a Christian, given his praise for Diocletian (John Malalas, Chronicle 12.44).
