Account

Title(s):
  • Account
Author:
Period covered:
At least mythical times-Domitian
Language:
Greek
State of Preservation:
Fragmentary
Genre:
  • Secular history (general)
  • Chronicle (chronica)
Remarks:
The three source authors have different versions of the name: Brutius (Jerome), Brettios (George Syncellus) and Bo(u)ttios (John Malalas). The name must already have been in the Chronicle of Eusebius, and the author is thus to be dated before 324 (which disproves the middle of 4th c. date proposed by Garstad 2011, 2014, 2016). He has been identified as a Christian chronicler or a Roman historian, but he need not have been a historian: he may also be a Christian author who was used as an authority in a single passage by Eusebius. He may have written in Latin.
