Remarks:
According to Jacoby (FGrHist 102), the historian Clement is a fictional author and the Suda entry the result of the identification of two homonymous authors: the chronographer mentioned by John Malalas (taken by Jacoby to be Clement of Alexandria; cf. our Clement of Antioch) and the grammarian who wrote commentaries on Plato (Schwartz 1900: 11).
Jacoby's identification of Clement of Alexandria with Malalas' source is far from sure (Jeffreys 1990: 175-176): indeed, Stronk (BNJ 102) rejects it, whereas Janiszewski (2006: 419-420) concedes that it is a possibility. In any case, as Janiszewski (2006: 420) points out, the historian of the Suda entry cannot correspond either to the chronographer mentioned by Malalas, or to the original Clement of Alexandria.
