Ulpianus

Name(s):
  • Ulpianus (Οὐλπιανός, Oulpianos)
Date:
Late 3rd-first half of 4th c.
Confession:
  • Pagan?
Remarks:
Ulpianus is mentioned by two entries of the Suda (ο 911-912): according to the first one, he came from Emesa; the second refers to him as a sophist from Antioch of Syria. Such a double reference is not a problem: the Suda often mentions a single author in several entries (BNJ 676 T1). Schemmel (1917: 188-191) proposes to identify Ulpianus with the anonymous teacher of Ascalon mentioned by Libanius (Oration 36.10), but that is beyond proof (Janiszewski 2006: 242-243).
