Browning (1978: 111) argued that the author was probably a monk. Whitby and Whitby (1989: xxvii-xxviii) suggest that the author was likely a member of the clergy of St. Sophia associated with the patriarch Stergius. Treadgold (2007: 342) conjectures that the author was a government official.
